During the monsoon of 1997, "Melghat" appeared on the front pages of few magazines that narrated horrifying sories of infant deaths and malnutrition problem there. This problem had gripped Melghat region for years together. Reading this, a group of friends decided to visit Melghat to see the reality. What they saw there was so disturbing that then and there they decided to work for eradicating child mortality and malnutrition problem from Melghat. This is how "Meghat Mitra" a project and "Maitri"- a voluntary organization was born. ...
In Melghat, along with health, the condition of children's education was also critical. In 2011, the initiative '100 Days of School' was implemented to set the stage for a substantial work for education.
40 out-of-school children were guided for 100 consecutive days at the Maitri center in Chilati and brought back into the school stream. ...
After many years of working at the 'Maitri' primary school level, as a next step, the 'Maitri' organization decided to work with the class VI children of the tribal ashram school, Jarida, on science and mathematics. The main objective is to reduce children's fear of science and mathematics and increase their confidence.
The classroom in the government ashram school in Melghat, a model of an airplane and seeing the curiosity, enthusiasm and joy in the eyes of the little children who were looking at it with curiosity, the yearning that Maitri should do something for the future of these children arose in my heart.
How does a plane fly in the air? Why do airplanes have wings? What does the airport look like? Answering such innocent questions of theirs created a strong desire to solve the question of their future and this project started. It was started from class 7th. Other than Melghat Maitri is also known for its work in Emergencies. There are many situation of natural disasters when Maitri vonteers were among the first to reach the disaster location. We start the Primary relief work immediately. But our speciality lies in the rehabiliation work at very remote location where help is not reached through other sources. ...
Since last 15+ years, MAITRI volunteers are raising funds with the help of old newspapers collected from thousands of families and few offices in Pune. Unwanted old newspapers stack and occupy the place in the house, so it is easy for people to commit for their donation in the form of old newspapers. ...
